Eliminating Dairy

I wanted to share with you all an excerpt from a great book that I've been reading.  I found the passage about dairy and it's link in diets to many common problems we see at Soma.  It's called "The Fat Fighter Diet" by Bruce Krahn. (http://www.thefatfighterdiet.com)

Many people consume dairy products for their high calcium content. However, studies have shown that North Americans are the highest consumers of dairy, but they also suffer from the highest incidence of osteoporosis. The reason for this is that dairy is an acid-forming food, and when the body is too acidic, it will leach calcium from the bones to act as a buffer. Better sources of calcium during and after) the cleanse include sesame seeds, almonds, sunflower seeds, soybeans or soy milk, broccoli, spinach, salmon, and slow-cook oatmeal.

Dairy contains many of the most common food allergens, and may also contain trace levels of antibiotics and hormones, which can disrupt the digestive system. Lactose intolerance is also an issue for a lathe portion of the population. In fact, between 30 million and 50 million Americans are lactose intolerant, with certain populations being more affected than others. Up to 80 percent of African Americans, 80-100 percent of American Indians, and 90-100 percent of Asian Americans are lactose intolerant. It is also interesting to note that no other animal on this earth drinks milk as a normal part of their diet after being weaned, let alone the milk of another animal. The protein content in cow's milk is often difficult for us to digest and, as a result, contributes to increased inflammation and mucus, particularly in the digestive tract. This disturbance can lead to various health problems, including the following:

 - Allergies
 - Asthma
 - Acne
 - Dark circles under eyes
 - Digestive complaints such as bloating and diarrhea
 - Ear infections
 - Weight gain
