Acne: Prevention, Treatment and Coverage

Acne usually begins in our teenage years, but the condition is not restricted to any age group and can persist into our 40s and 50s.  Basically, acne is caused by three major factors: an over-production of oil in our sebaceous glands, blockage of the hair follicles that release oil, and the growth of bacteria (P. acnes).  Hormonal imbalances can also affect the skin's balance and cause acne.

To prevent acne, my favourite treatments are regular peels and facials.  Avoid doing microdermabrasions as they can be too stripping and irritating to the acne. Peels will help shed the first couple layers of dead skin cells so that new skin cells can generate and give you a flawless complexion.

Gently wash the affected areas twice a day with a non-comedegenic glycolic wash (I have recommended SkinTX Medicated Acne Wash with great results) to help unclog pores but leave the skin's natural moisture barrier intact.  Avoid alcohol-based toners and astringents that are far too harsh for acneic skin. The skin needs to be balanced and properly hydrated to treat the acne.

Until the acne settles and the peels/facials take effect, the best line to cover acne is a mineral makeup line. My favourite is GloMinerals. (Jane Iredale is great too, but Glo Minerals is triple milled and I find sits better on the skin). Try the Camoflauge and the Pressed Base. The Matte Finishing Powder is also great way to mattify your skin during the day and provides a good mineral coverage.
