Intense Pulse Light Therapy: What You Need To Know

Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatments can help fix an array of skin problems.  But it's important to be aware of what it cannot treat.  At Soma, we strive to educate our clients on their skin and what treatments and products are right for them.  Here is a breakdown of different skin conditions:

Hypo-pigmentation (loss of pigment / light-skin patches)
This condition usually genetic and/or caused by not having any sun protection.  This is NOT suitable for IPL treatment as IPL cannot stimulate pigment development.  I recommend facials and a daily SPF products.  At Soma, our Yonka facial followed Yon-Ka's SPF line is the standard treatment.

Hyper-pigmentation (increase of pigment)
This is sun damage, age spots, etc. and IPL is marvelous at reducing these dark patches.  Soma's Purifico photofacial is specially designed to target hyper-pigmentation (it works even better when combined with a peel like the Glow Essentalis or the Potentia Soma).

Melasma (aka pregnancy mask)
This is a hormonal condition where the pigmentation is irregularly shaped.  Again, this is not recommended to be treated with IPL as it can make it worse.  There are other products and treatments though, like Vivier's Skin Tx line and peels (like Soma's Glow Essentalis and Potentia Soma) that can help.

Dilated/Broken Capillaries
Soma's Clarus photofacial is the very BEST treatment for this!  The Palomar green light is attracted to the oxy-hemoglobin in the vessel. It heats it up and collapses it.  Vessels can come back especially around the nose (because they are attached to larger vessels in the head).  Therefore,  I recommend repeating it 3 times 2-4 weeks apart, then monthly maintenance.  There are also a tonne of products that can help combat this condition.  I recommend Glo Minerals Recommend Redness Relief Powder and Yon-Ka's Phyto 54 Cream, which are both great at reducing redness.

Rosacea (flushing redness typically through the cheeks and nose)
Just like capillaries, IPL is awesome for treating rosacea.  Soma's Clarus photofacial will diffuse redness in only 4-6 treatments.

Remember, treatments with the IPL are progressive, like hair removal, so you will see a bigger difference with each one!
