Glo Minerals Review from Mohawk Makeup

Our wonderful friend at Mohawk Makeup just reviewed Glo Minerals and here's what she had to say about it!

By Valerie Harvey From Mohawk Makeup

Shopping for makeup isn’t what it used to be. Nowadays, women are more conscious of ingredients in the products they consume and that includes makeup. Because of this heightened awareness, I’ve felt a responsibility to offer my clients the option of cosmetics with more organic ingredients. However, not all lines that offer more natural ingredients are created equal. In my opinion, much of the “organic” makeup on the market looks great the first 30 minutes after its applied but doesn’t seem to have much staying power. The brand I turn to that gets it right in this department and offers so much more, is Glo Minerals.

Recently, the lovely Lourdes Juan, Director of Soma Advanced Skin & Body Therapy in Calgary, was kind enough to send a beautiful selection of Glo Minerals eye shadows to use on my clients. I’ve always been impressed with the color range offered by Glo but what I was especially excited to hear that the formulation contains vitamins A, C and E and also green tea extracts. This means that with every application, you are giving your skin a dose of powerful antioxidants, which protect your skin and reverse the signs of aging. Every product also offers anti-inflammatory ingredients, which is great for reducing puffiness around the eyes.

I applied the colors Lourdes sent on my model, Megan, a co-worker who has particularly sensitive skin around her eyes. Megan generally does not wear eye makeup for that reason. Glo Minerals is perfect for her skin type because it not only offers natural, non-comedogenic ingredients, but it excludes perfumes and chemical dyes, which are known culprits of skin and eye irritation. Not only did Megan love the look I gave her using Glo’s gorgeous shadows and eyeliner, but she said she felt no discomfort whatsoever around her eyes. I also really enjoy the silky texture and pigments of the shadows and the smooth consistency of the gel eyeliner I used. They layered beautifully on her eyes to create this sultry look. This color palette is also versatile enough to easily translate into a softer, everyday look.

I really couldn’t ask for more with the wide range of benefits Glo Minerals offers it clients. To find out more about other amazing Glo Minerals products go to www.somacalgary.com or www.gloprofessional.com.

Vitamin B12 and Your Skin

B12 is an essential component of many critical pathways in our bodies.  A deficiency of this component of the vitamin B complex can lead to a multitude of symptoms such as fatigue and memory loss.  But did you know that B12 is also essential for healthy skin?  If you are suffering from chronic skin issues, a dull complexion or premature signs on aging, you might be B12 deficient.

Our Soma naturopathic doctor, Dr. Aisha Hernandex Vargas, does blood testing and vitamin B12 injections.  Checking your levels and sitting down for a discussion on your diet can determine whether or not a vitamin B12 deficiency may be a cause of your skin concerns.

Retinol: A girl's best friend

Who needs diamonds? Retinol is a term that describes vitamin A derivatives that help to kill acne bacteria, unclog pores, and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It speeds up cell turnover to even out discoloured skin (even more effective when hydraquinone is used as well), and can even increase the production of collagen. Although highly effective, the prescription retinols can leave the skin irritated and a bit red (Tazorac, adapalene creams etc).

You don't have to wreak havoc on your skin with retinols to get the desired effect. A personal favourite is the Skin Tx Retinol SR. "SR" stands for slow release. It gently penetrates your skin so that you slowly absorb the retinols and your skin can manage the ingredient. Apply once in the evening. A treatment cream for breakouts, wrinkles, collagen production, and pigmented skin is truly a girl's best friend.

How can I get rid of sun spots?

Hyperpigmentation occurs when melanocytes (the skin cells responsible for producing pigment) become overactive, thus overproducing melanin which gives color to the skin, eyes and hair.  Hyperpigmentation caused by age (age spots), sun exposure (sun spots/damage) or acne scarring are all treatable with medical aesthetics.  Melasma, pigmentation caused by hormonal imbalances (such as pregnancy) and exacerbated by sun exposure, cannot be treated as effectively.
Depending on the severity of the hyperpigmentation there are a few options for treatment.  Chemical peels are effective 20-min treatments in which the skin is deeply exfoliated using alpha or beta hydroxy acid.  Light chemical peels can improve superficial discolorations.  A medium peel uses a stronger concentration of glycolic or trichloroacetic acid to reach the epidermis and the upper layer of the dermis and can correct age spots, freckles and moderate discoloration.  For darker deeper hyperpigmentation, a deep peel (like our Potentia Soma) penetrates the dermis, which allows it to address more significant discoloration issues.  For an even greater effect, try pairing your peel with an IPL treatment.  IPL treatments utilize specialized Palomar Medical Laser handpieces which filter light from different parts of the spectrum.  The light emitted from the laser handpieces is attracted to melanin.  Using the principle of selective photothermolysis, the light is absorbed by the chromophores (which produce melanin) in your skin, and is turned into heat, which thus destroys the chromaphore, creating a lesion.  These lesions then slough off the skin typically within two to three days.

The key to success when dealing with unwanted pigmentation is PREVENTION.  Use SPF daily to ensure that the spots you worked (and paid) to remove stay away!

Why do I have adult acne?

Adult acne is caused by oil from sebaceous glands, sebum, that clogs pores, attract bacteria and thus, cause your skin to become inflamed. For some adults, acne breakouts are a result of hypersensitivity or hormone overproduction.  For women, this can happen during pregnancy, peri-menopause, and menopause.  At Soma, we have also seen that food sensitivities to highly inflammatory foods such as dairy and gluten, have also contributed to a rise of adult acne in some clients.  Several other environmental factors can also contribute to the development of acne, such as the use of corticosteroids (for all you gym nuts out there!) or the continual application of sub-grade cosmetics (Invest in your skin and use good quality mineral makeup!)

There are many treatments and products available to help combat adult acne.  Most times, an inside-out approach is best.  Start looking at what you're eat, how much water you're drinking, how much and when you are sleeping.  I've seen a great number of clients see Dr. Aisha, our naturopath and have results within the week, just from following her advice and taking a real look into their eating, drinking and sleeping habits.

Of course, topical treatments are always effective, as long as they are followed up at home with appropriate and good quality products.  I suggest chemical peels (or facials with an upgraded peel) every 3-4 weeks for adult acne.  The acid in the peels exfoliate the skin, allowing the dead skin cells to shed more effectively, and help to dissolve excess oil buildup within the pore.

For at acne home products, SkinTX Medicated Acne Wash is our number one best seller, as the results speak for themselves.  This product is absolutely amazing.  Dozens of clients have successfully tamed their adult acne by incorporating this cleanser into their skin care routine.  It is usually my first suggestion for adult acne.  Makeup is also a huge factor when dealing with adult acne.  Be sure to invest in some good quality mineral makeup.  Glo Minerals Pressed Base Foundation is our top makeup seller (over all skin types and conditions).  It's triple-milled mineral makeup from one of the few makeup brands safe enough to apply post-treatment.
